Garden Club

 

First Thursday of the month, 11:00 am

 

Join the Elizabethtown - Westport Garden Club on the first Thursday of each month at 11:00 am. They generally meet at the Social Center, but often meet at members' home gardens during the summer months. Please check our current calendars on the home page for updates.

 

The objectives of the Garden Club, as a non-profit organization, are to promote interest in gardening, and to maintain and further the beautification and environmental improvement of our community.

Pleasant Valley Chorale

 

Love to sing? Need an outlet? The Pleasant Valley Chorale just might be what you are looking for. 

Led by director Susan Hughes, the Chorale is a fun group with over thirty members from all over the Champlain Valley. New members are welcome at the start of each session; no audition is required.

 

The Pleasant Valley Chorale will start rehearsals for its spring session on Tuesday, January 29th at 7pm, with a great program of songs by Broadway composer Richard Rodgers. 

 

New members are welcome; please know that there is a weekly commitment for this group.  Dues are $15 for the session.  Concerts are early this spring: April 26 and 28.  For more information, call the Center.

The Pleasant Valley Chorale was started in 1986 by Joe Wyant.

Writers Group

The Elizabethtown Social Center sponsors a Writers Group coordinated by local author Sandra Weber. Please check our calendars for meeting times.

 

The group is open to all skill levels, ages, and interests.Group members will offer supportive and constructive criticism to each other’s writing efforts and exchange information about writing, publishing and writer events in the area. The group is open to a wide variety of genre, including short story, novel chapters, poetry, essays, nonfiction book chapters, newsletters, newspaper/magazine articles, and children’s stories - Or, simply recording your memories for your family.

 

The main requirement in the group is that members have a desire to support writers and the creative process.  Writing or sharing writing with the group is not required, just an enjoyment of learning about writing offering encouragement to writers. For those who are (or want to be) writers, it is an opportunity to get feedback, meet other writers, improve your skills, and learn more about publishing.

 

Coordinator Sandra Weber is an independent scholar with a focus on Adirondack Mountain region and women’s history. She has published nine books, including Adirondack Roots:: Stories of Hiking, History and Women: Breaking Trail: Remarkable Women of the Adirondacks with co-author, Peggy Lynn; and the Finest Square Mile: Mount Jo and Heart Lake. American Legion Post 551

The American Legion Post 551 meets at the Social Center on the third Thursday every month at 7 pm. Anyone who has served in the millitary is eligible to attend meetings and join.

 Annual Arthur G. Hooper Decorating Contest

Homes and businesses in New Russia, Elizabethtown and Lewis are judged in the categories of Most Beautiful, Most Original, and The Spitit of Christmas. Winners have their names engraved on a permanent plaque that hangs in the Social Center and receive a gift.

 

The Decorating Contest began in 1982 in memory of Arthur G. Hooper.

Ukulele Society of Elizabethtown

Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. at the Elizabethtown Social Center. Please see the calendars on our homepage for exact dates.

 

Casual ukulele players from around the North Country are getting together to develop their skills and enjoy creating sound in a group. Come join the fun of making music in this beginner workshop/practice group. All skill levels are welcome. The group plans to help each other with pointers and introductory exercises. Anyone interested in starting an interest group or community activity is encouraged to contact us. The Social Center regularly hosts groups such as knitting/crocheting, card/board games, etc. Please contact us if you have an interest you would like to share in a social atmosphere. 

Memory Cafe


The SUNY Plattsburgh Caregiver Support Initiative returns to the Social Center with an opportunity for those with memory loss and their caregivers.

The Memory Cafe provides a gathering place for friends with Alzheimer's disease or other Dementia and their caregivers to relax and enjoy social events, refreshments and entertainment.

A series of free Memory Cafes will be held on the third Tuesday in September, October, and November, from 1-3 pm.

Walk-ins are welcome, but RSVP is appreciated to Kristin Fleming at (518)564-2049.
