Family Farm Visit a Smashing Success!
Last Sunday, the E'town Social Center & Sand River Community Farm collaborated on a very rewarding event - a family farm visit to help with the fall harvest. Over 45 people of all ages visited the Keeseville volunteer-run farm and I think we actually helped get some work done!
The farm generously shared snacks and a dinner for all of us and dedicated the day to weaving our very large group into their work flow. Annie Bingham and Adam Wilson planned the day carefully - with crafts, singing, snacks, harvesting, cooking prep & a delicious supper of roasted squash, tomatoes in lamb broth. We are very grateful to them for welcoming us wholeheartedly.
The kids and adults threw themselves into the farming - picking peppers, pulling down old tomato vines, scrubbing potatoes, peeling garlic and more. The only time the kids voiced objections was when we ran out of potatoes to scrub! Amazing.
Sand River Community Farm "is an experiment in neighborly farming and feeding. All food and events are offered as a gift, with no barrier to access." Go check it out yourself or take a look at their website. There are many ways to get involved.
Thanks to other donations - Domaine Champlain Orchards (Kathryn Cramer) sent a few hundred apples and Essex Farm sent a pint of their outrageously yummy sour cream & butter for our boiled potatoes. BTW - Essex Farm is accepting new members and will be happy to talk to anyone about the fresh veggies, meats, dairy, grains and other food they offer.
