A very big thank you to Northwaters Canoe Camp for the loan of a canoe trailer for our Teen Rec trip to Lincoln Pond last weekend. The teens had a great time. Some learned that steering on flat water isn’t as easy as it looks! Neither is communicating with your paddling partner. But fun was had by all, with lunch on an island.
ABOUT NORTHWATERS
Northwaters' headquarters are here in Westport. All summer, they run fun and challenging canoe trips for youth out of their base camp at Temagami in Ontario. Groups from 5th grade through high school venture out into the wilderness for weeks at a time.
Their website reads “While the experience is challenging, it is not about conquering rivers or mountains. Emphasis is rather upon learning from the land and one another in a spirit that honours balance and respect. We have found that when participants learn to handle life on the trail, they become better equipped to handle life in general”.
Our very own Executive Director, Laurie House, sent her son to Northwaters and shares her perspective as a parent:
“Northwaters Camp brought out so many great qualities in my son – things parents hope to teach their kids but often aren’t sure how. He learned how much fun it is to try hard, to accept and give help, to be confident in his own decision-making skills and to own his own feelings. Plus his friendships from the camp are truly special.”
Northwaters offers financial support through Deepwater, a scholarship program dedicated to “bridging the Adventure Gap by removing financial barriers to outdoor education”. 100% of donations to Deepwater go toward funding participants’ experiencies.

In the summer of 2024, Northwaters suffered the loss of key buildings on their beloved island camp, Langskib, to a fire. Watch this 20 minute video "Langskib Rising: A Story of Community and Resiliency" to hear about the rebuilding and get a deeper glimpse into the history and philosophy behind the camp.
